Christine Portela is a dynamic news leader with over 19 years of experience, leading diverse and innovative teams across local, national, and cable newsrooms in both English and Spanish.

In her most recent role as the Director of News Operations and Regional Content Lead for Univision’s Local Media, she collaborated with news leaders in 19 local markets to create and execute multi-platform content strategies grounded in audience research studies. She successfully led two Univision teams through the Local Television News Innovation Table Stakes initiative, a transformative project with Arizona State University and the Knight Foundation, aiming to modernize local newsrooms for the digital age using Performance-Driven Change.

Before joining Univision, Christine served as Senior Producer for José Díaz-Balart at MSNBC and Telemundo, covering breaking news worldwide in two languages. She also played a pivotal role in launching Fusion-TV, a joint venture between Univision and ABC aimed at young and diverse audiences, during her year-long engagement with the network.

Christine kicked off her career as an Emma Bowen Foundation Fellow at the NBC station in Miami and has received multiple awards, including a national Gracie award for local news producing and several Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards.

Passionate about local journalism, coaching, and fostering diversity in the media industry, Christine serves on the advisory boards of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and the Poynter Institute. She is also a longstanding member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

A proud University of Florida graduate, Christine resides in South Florida with her husband and two young sons.
